The Cloquet park land totals hundreds of acres of open space. The Cloquet Parks & Recreation Department oversees 14 parks, which includes amenities such as baseball; camping; cross country ski trails and ski jumps; football and soccer fields; softball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts; outdoor skating and hockey rinks; playground equipment; swimming pond; winter tubing hill; skateboard park; single land bike track and picnic shelters. In addition, the Department has begun a program of pedestrian trail development and currently maintains about 2 miles of trail in Cloquet. With eventual connection to the Munger Trail in Carlton and Jay Cooke Park, it will be one of the most scenic trail systems in the area.

Parks Master Plan

On December 17, 2013, the Cloquet City Council adopted the Cloquet Parks and Recreation System Master Plan that establishes a long term vision for park, recreation, open space and trail and bikeway systems. The five major components of the vision for the system include:

  • We believe high quality parks and trails build a sense of connection between neighbors. By serving a diverse community, they bind neighbors together through shared experience and play...
  • We live in a place carved from the woods and anchored by the river. We plan to care for our wild spaces, so that they are healthy and beautiful, and will continue to support the community’s well-being...
  • Like our predecessors, we know that we can build a foundation for our future if we invest in our parks today. We should take a long view and leave a legacy of excellent parks and fiscal responsibility...
  • We see strong leadership by staff with support from enthusiastic volunteers as the best way to plan, build, program, and maintain our parks and trails....
  • Parks provide unique opportunities for all members of our diverse community, regardless of age, background, or income, to participate in adventures with friends and neighbors...

The Plan was developed based upon an extensive twenty month process including public surveys, public meetings, focus group sessions, and a proactive task force of individuals representing the citizens of Cloquet. The Plan details a variety of specific goals and action steps that support the vision of the Plan. These action items will be pursued to move forward implementation of the Plan.
