The patrol division is the core and backbone of the Cloquet Police Department. Uniformed officers responded to over 11,000 calls for service in 2022. Officers respond twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Their jurisdiction includes the cities of Cloquet and Scanlon. Officers work closely with the Fond du Lac Police Department by assisting with calls on the Fond du Lac Reservation within Cloquet. CPD’s patrol jurisdiction is approximately 37 square miles, serving a population of approximately 13,500 people.

Officers respond to a wide range of calls for service including but not limited to:

Domestic violence, all other violent crimes (assault, threats, homicide), sex crimes, property crimes, gun-related crimes, robbery, drug crimes, protection order violations, mental health/psych issues, child protection, and traffic complaints/crashes.

Officers frequently respond to mental health-related incidents involving drug and alcohol use. Officers are trained to assist people in these situations while often utilizing the Cloquet Area Fire District for ambulance service to a local hospital if necessary. Officers also employ two embedded social workers who assist law enforcement with on-scene crisis intervention.

Along with responding to calls for service, officers also implement proactive policing. This includes traffic enforcement, foot patrol, and bike patrol. These are often used to enforce laws involving impaired drivers, vehicle prowls, burglaries, damage to property, illegal drug/gang activities, and warrant services.

Officers utilize marked patrol vehicles as a primary method of responding to calls. Patrol vehicles (squads) are equipped with squad cameras (with audio), which record officer responses to incidents and document pertinent information from the incident for investigation purposes. Patrol vehicles are equipped with the latest technologies to enable officers to complete most calls from start to finish. Patrol vehicles are regularly maintained to be in good operating condition, creating efficiency in responding to incidents.

Annually, patrol officers receive all training mandated by the Police Officers Standards and Training Board (PO.S.T.). This ensures that officers are updated with the latest skills, information, and methods pertinent to their profession. Many officers also attend elective training to gain skills and knowledge to perform their duties better and serve the community.

Officers are utilized at special events sponsored by the city or other community groups. Some examples of these events are National Night Out, Labor Day and Home for the Holidays parades, the 4th of July celebration, craft shows, and many community sporting events. Also, officers often assist with escorting funeral processions through the city.
